Martha Stewart Experiences Weightlessness on a Space Adventures' Zero-Gravity Flight
January 7 2006
Today, Martha Stewart, along with several other Space Adventures' clients, experienced weightlessness during a Zero-Gravity flight. Space Adventures, the world's leading space experiences company, assisted Ms. Stewart during the flight as she floated and flipped.
"Martha Stewart is truly a remarkable woman," said Eric Anderson, president and CEO of Space Adventures. "We are constantly seeking adventurous spirits and we look forward to sharing many more adventures with her in the future."
Ms. Stewart was instructed by a veteran NASA astronaut and accompanied by experienced professionals who provided pre-flight training on weightlessness. The aircraft, a modified Boeing 727-200 jet, performed a series of parabolic maneuvers, beginning from level flight and pitching up to approximately 45 degrees. As the airplane flies upward, passengers experience two Gs of force going up and zero-gravity coming down. Each parabola requires a block of airspace from about 25,000 to about 35,000 feet. Passengers obtain approximately 28 to 30 seconds of micro-gravity during each parabola.
Space Adventures, the only company to have successfully launched private explorers to space, is headquartered in Arlington, Va. with offices in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Moscow and Tokyo. It offers a variety of programs such as Zero-Gravity and MiG flights, cosmonaut training, spaceflight qualification programs and reservations on future suborbital spacecrafts. The company's advisory board comprises Apollo 11 moonwalker Buzz Aldrin, shuttle astronauts Kathy Thornton, Robert (Hoot) Gibson, Charles Walker, Norm Thagard, Sam Durrance, Byron Lichtenberg, Pierre Thuot and Skylab astronaut Owen Garriott.
